After the European Gold Metal in U21 at Montenegro in June, the decent first appearance at the Olympic games of Tokyo in July, yet another great performance by the 18yo Marilena Makri, at the ILCA U21 World Championship, at Gdynia Poland concluded today. The young Marilena managed yet, another podium position, finishing 3rd at the World Championship in U21 category.
Marilena put on an incredible performance, grabbing the overall lead throughout the qualification round in what it seemed to be a very close fight with the two Italian sailors and the sailor from Spain. Going into the final six races of the Gold Fleet, in unfavorable wind conditions, Marilena finally finished 3rd behind the Italians Della Valle and Floriani who finished 1st and 2nd with 33 and 35 penalty points accordingly, against Marilena 40 points. Marilena finished 8 of the 9 races in the top 10 with 2 bullets. With excellent work from the entire team, especially her coach Haris Tsolis, the sailCY top sailor and member of the Famagusta Nautical Club Sailing Family, prove to be at the top of her performance. It is a long waited, well deserved world-wide recognition for Marilena who establishes herself in the ILCA 6 women category.
The Famagusta Nautical Club will host an official reception for the athlete and coach of the Club, as well as all members involved – coaching team, family, sponsors, sports and political organizations and officials who contributed to the success of 2021, on Wednesday September 15th. Details will be sent out.
